One of the big changes made by the health reform law is that it standardized and added to the benefits offered in individual health insurance policies. In addition to making all plans guaranteed issue, which means the insurance company can’t turn you down or charge you more based on pre-existing medical conditions, and helping people pay for their coverage with generous premium tax credits, the government now requires all plans sold in the individual market—whether through the marketplace or outside the marketplace—to cover maternity, mental health, substance abuse, preventive care, and more.
That’s the good news. The problem, of course, is that all of this costs money, and that makes our plans more expensive. Still, for those that qualify for a tax credit, they may be actually get better coverage for less money.
